Two South Florida Motorcycle Accidents Occur Over the Weekend

By: Lisa Vari, the Biker Chick Lawyer

Two lives were lost this weekend as a result of two unrelated South Florida motorcycle accidents. The first incident took place in Miramar on Friday evening and the other in Fort Myers on Saturday.

On Friday, as everyone was heading home from work, a four vehicle collision took place on Interstate-75 in Miramar. One of these four vehicles was a motorcycle, and as a result of the collision, the 23-year-old South Florida motorcyclist has died.

According to witnesses, the cause of the accident was the motorcyclist. Reports indicate that he was trying to pass a BMW sedan when he lost control of the motorcycle, hit the side of the car and was ejected. The motorcycle was then swept up underneath the cab of a tractor trailer.

The second tragic Florida motorcycle accident this weekend occurred early on Saturday morning. Bethany Catherman, a Fort Myers biker, was killed in an accident on Burnt Store Road in Charlotte County. Reports state that the death occurred because the driver of a car collided with her motorcycle after failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the car, Andrew Pineda, was attempting to make a left turn when he collided with Catherman. The FHP said Catherman, who was wearing a helmet, tried to avoid a crash but lost control of the motorcycle and slid into Pineda's path.

Tragedies like these remind all bikers of the importance of riding safe. Never attempt to make a dangerous pass in front of a car, especially on a busy interstate, and never assume that another vehicle is going to obey traffic laws.
